Jess and Ethan’s Lake Norman wedding wasn’t exactly planned to be what it came to be. That turned out to be just fine by them. Originally set for Asheville, North Carolina, they had to completely rethink their day when Hurricane Helene made their venue unavailable. Instead, they found themselves exchanging vows on top of Lake Norman, just outside Charlotte, NC. It was an intimate, unforgettable wedding celebration with their closest family and friends.
They rented two beautiful Airbnbs overlooking a quiet cove on Lake Norman. These lakeside homes became their personal wedding venues for several days of gathering, laughter, and connection. Jess and her bridesmaids got ready in one house while Ethan and his groomsmen prepared in the other.
Their ceremony was truly one-of-a-kind. Jess and Ethan stood literally on top of Lake Norman itself—on a floating dock—while their guests watched from a covered dock about 20 feet away. Their wedding party stood on an adjacent dock, creating an intimate setting like no other. Their dear friends officiated the ceremony, filling it with meaningful moments, including a reading from The Fault in Our Stars, one of their favorite books.
Both Jess and Ethan are talented writers and avid readers, and their vows were absolute perfection. After everyone in attendance—including us—was in tears from their beautiful words, they shared an epic kiss and threw their hands high into the air in celebration. It was the perfect way to kick off an incredible evening of love and joy.
A quick rain shower forced us all inside for about 30 minutes. The perfect time to get some fun photos of Jess & Ethan in one of the theater rooms in the home!

Dinner being served around one of the home’s pools created a relaxed, and elegant vibe under the evening sky. We were able to get some great drone shots of their first dance while the sun set over the lake, painting the water in golden light.
A Cozy & Fun Reception
After dinner, everyone boarded a shuttle and rode a few miles up the road to their charming little reception space. The open bar, disco ball, and live music set the scene for a night of fun It was intimate, fun, and completely personal, everything Jess and Ethan could have wanted.
What began as a weather-forced change turned into a truly beautiful love story. This Lake Norman wedding was a perfect example of how unexpected plans can lead to the most meaningful celebrations.
